║ GT-HELP ║ \CONFIG.SYS - configuring it for GT 15.50
╚═════════╩════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
The CONFIG.SYS file must be in the root directory of your boot drive
(usually drive C). If you specified the boot drive correctly when
GT-Help requested it, that file will presently be available in the
other editor window for you to examine and make any necessary changes.
The important paramters of config.sys are :
┌───────┐
│ FILES │
└───────┘
Try: FILES=50
If you have less than 50 files, you may find the system locks up. Add
the parameter FILES=50, or edit it if it presently exists and shows
less than 50.
┌────────┐
│ STACKS │
└────────┘
I use STACKS=30,256 which seems to be OK for DOS 3.2 on a
non-networked system.
Paul Meiners recommends STACKS=62,512 for DOS 3.3 - this is also
suitable when running on a network.
For other DOS versions, it is probably best to state your system
details and ask in the GT support echo for a recommendation.
┌─────────┐
│ BUFFERS │
└─────────┘
Also DOS version dependent. In principle, the more buffers, the faster
it will run, particularly where larger message bases (more than 300
active messages in any one message base) are involved.
If you find you need more than 30 buffers, consider instead a cache
program. But some cache programs can interfere with the running of GT.
If problems occur, try without the cache to see if that is the cause.
┌───────┐
│ SHELL │
└───────┘
Since GT requires you to add new entries into the environment, you may
receive an Out of Environment message. A SHELL entry in config.sys
will fix that, for example :
SHELL=C:\command.com /e:512 /p
This is for DOS 3.2, and allocates 512 bytes to the environment. In
some other versions of DOS, the /e parameter is in *paragraphs* (ie,
/e:32 provides the same environment as /e:512 in DOS 3.2). You may
need to check this in your DOS manual.
┌──────────────────────────┐
│ Device Drivers and TSR's │
└──────────────────────────┘
It is recommended that you should NOT configure ANSI.SYS on a system
which runs GT. GT does not require it (though other programs you run
*may* do so). However, ANSI.SYS can in some circumstances (eg if you
TYPE a file that a caller uploads) remap your keyboard in undesirable
ways.
Other TSR's may interfere with GT. If there seems to be a problem,
leave them out progressively as far possible to determine the conflict.
┌────────────────────┐
│ Editing CONFIG.SYS │
└────────────────────┘
CONFIG.SYS should presently be in the other editor window for you to
examine and make any necessary changes.
Note that any changes you make there do not come into effect until next
time you reboot. If the parameters were not already appropriate, you
may need to reboot before executing GT.
